9 Things You Should Do to Prepare to Be a Boston Nanny

If you’re thinking about becoming a Boston nanny, we’ve put together a list of the top nine things to prepare yourself.

Certifications

Having certifications will not only help you get a nannying job but will help you feel more confident in your nannying skills. The American Heart Association offers basic training to help you get CPR/First Aid Certified. Not only will it look great on a resume, but it will give you an understanding of how to help little ones during an emergency. Most classes are between four and six hours long.

Learn About Child Development

When you are around children all the time, it’s essential to have a basic understanding of their development. Not only will it help you better understand their behaviors, but it will help you plan a day that is well-rounded and full of activities that will help them grow. From books to local college certification programs, there are various resources out there to help you better understand child development.

Resume

One of the best things you can do to prepare to become a Boston nanny is to write or update your resume. Your resume should outline your recent work history, certifications, and any applicable skills. Having an updated resume on hand will allow you to send it to potential families quickly. Be sure to check your resume for accuracy, grammar, and spelling mistakes.

References

When looking for a Boston nannying position, most parents will require letters of reference. It helps parents or agencies read about your skills and your best qualities from past employers and allows them to get to know you better. With an updated resume and references, potential parents will have a good understanding of your past work.

Network

It’s important to get to know and network with local nannies. Nannies tend to work alone, and it can be hard to get support when you don’t have any coworkers. Networking will not only give you someone to turn to for advice but will help you feel like you know others in your field and can even lead to referrals!

Research the Community

When looking to become a Boston nanny, it’s important to research the different areas of the community. Knowing what part of Boston the potential families are in will help you explore the area and find local classes, playgrounds, parks, and more! Knowing these things will help you show the parents how educated you are in the area they live and help plan fun activities for the kids once hired.

Consider Experience

When it comes to being a nanny, many parents or agencies look for various relevant childcare experiences. Anywhere from 1 to 3 years is a great starting point. If you find yourself lacking that extra experience, look for opportunities to gain more experience, like babysitting for neighbors or working in a preschool or daycare.

Insurance

Most nanny positions do not come with benefits. It’s essential to consider this before accepting a position. Be sure that you have health insurance before starting a nanny position; it will help cut costs of medical bills if you get sick.

If you plan on driving to work or driving the family’s car, you must have car insurance! Be sure to have your insurance plan in place before starting a position. It will give you and your future nanny family peace of mind.

Brush Up On Cooking

Having cooking skills is not only great for you but will also be a skill you can put on your resume when looking for a nannying position. Knowing how to cook can open up opportunities for more nanny positions and looks excellent to parents who are health conscious.
